Renovating a Small Kitchen When You Love to Entertain

Posted on: 29 June 2017

When remodeling your kitchen, there are lots of fun ideas you can play with, but when deciding on your final design, you should keep in mind how you use your kitchen. Do you love to entertain? Are you working with a small space? If so, here are some ideas to make the most of your kitchen renovation.

1. Open It Up

Even if you can't extend the size of the kitchen, you can increase its openness. Consider knocking out walls, replacing small doorways with large arches, or adding other openings between your kitchen and adjoining rooms.

This allows the party to flow more easily from space to space, and it lessens the burden on the kitchen. Guests who would normally flock to the kitchen may feel content staying nearby in a lounge or dining room area.

2. Add a Bar

A bar is essential if you have a small kitchen but love to entertain. You can add bars between your kitchen and adjoining rooms, but if that isn't possible, you may want to integrate a bar into a centre island. That ways, guests have a place to sit, snack and enjoy a cocktail in the kitchen.

3. Tighten Up the Triangle

In a kitchen, the triangle refers to the fridge, sink and oven. Whilst cooking a meal, you move between these areas a lot, and you want this triangle to be as tight as possible. Triangles that are too large make cooking inefficient because they force you to spend too much time walking around.

When it comes to entertaining, an overly large triangle can be especially cumbersome. If you have to zigzag around the kitchen, your guests may end up feeling like they are in the way. However, if you have everything you need in a relatively tight space, your guests can find spots to hang out around the outside the triangle.

4. Don't Forget Ambiance

Of course, you may want to think about than just functional elements in your kitchen renovation. You should also think about style and ambiance. Consider putting in task lighting—this allows you to see while you're cooking without exposing your guests to harsh overhead lights that kill the mood. You may also want to create ambiance with under-cabinet lights, pendant lights over the bar or even LEDs lining certain areas.
